Fires in Hillsboro

Hillsboro Firefighters fight Downtown fireJust this past week there have been a few more major fires here in Hillsboro that have caused a quick reflection.

First, it has me giving thanks for the many first responders we have available in our area. In the most recent four-alarm fire downtown, the news reports that "A total of 40 fire and EMS units responded to the fire, bringing more than 130 first responders." We really are blessed to live in a place where there's such well-resourced community support.

Second, it has me thinking how, even with all that help, there were still 8 businesses that were displaced and who knows what other consequences of this terrible fire.

Finally, it calls to mind the limited but genuinely significant role that insurance can play in recovering from such a disaster. For sure, insurance can't wind back the clock, but it can help

  • provide coverage for repairing and replacing the dwelling structures,
  • cover property that was destroyed in the fire,
  • replace lost income
  • cover loss of use
  • and so forth

Wherever you have your insurance, if you haven't reviewed it lately, now's a good time to figure out what coverage you have.
