We know that you could be doom-scrolling or scheduling a dental appointment, 🙂 but if you’re here in Oregon, especially in the Hillsboro area, we’d love to provide a car and home insurance comparison for you. Start the year with a win!

Although these past few years have been brutal for car and home pricing, pricing has begun to flatten a bit. We’re even seeing some decreases! So it’s a good idea to check your car and home insurance rates, especially if you haven’t checked in a few years.
We understand that people choose not to get quotes for a variety of reasons.
Some report busy-ness, kid events, work pursuits, or caring for parents, or life just feels crazy. Some report run-of-the-mill laziness. (Not that we’ve ever experienced this.) Others report that the idea of talking with a salesperson jangles their nerves and fills them with anxiety. And that’s what we want to tackle here.
This is not quite a matter of fright but what we’ll here call, “the inward groan.”
The Inward Groan
I suspect that many of us inwardly groan at the thought of talking to a salesperson, and those of us who don’t are probably salespeople.
The main reason for that uneasy reflex is probably due to personality and also lousy experiences. Who doesn’t have a handful of experiences with pushy, aggressive, or sneaky salespeople? Ergggg.
I recently had a pest control salesperson knock on my door and ask me if I had plans for dealing with my home’s ants and spiders like my neighbor, you know, the one across the street who was smart enough to purchase this salesman’s services. I told him kindly, “I take care of it myself and don’t want your service but thank you for the offer.”
True to his pest training, the fellow pushed on, held up an insect picture book(!) and asked, “so, can you tell me which of these insects you’ve seen?” I laughed at the children’s book approach (“Spiders and earwigs and ants, oh my!”)–a first for me, said “Good luck out there,” and he relented and scootered away to his next neighbor.
Still, the whole exchange was uncomfortable because, well, the inward groan is real.
But that inward groan may be keeping you from improving your insurance situation, and not all insurance people are pushy!
Tips for managing quote anxiety:
- Take 5-10 minutes to prepare so you’re not in a rush. Gather your insurance materials into a pile or into a digital folder. And then take a few minutes to review each one so you have a sense of what you’ve got, your coverages and insurance cost. Take a break. 🙂
- Remember that you’re the decision-maker, that you’ll only switch companies if it’s worth it to you.
- Remember worst- and best-case. Worst case, you find out you’ve got competitive pricing and probably won’t need to check again for a few years. Best-case, you may well save some major money!
- Identify a few places to call for quotes. We favor independent agencies because they can get you quotes from multiple places but there are good agencies for State Farm or Allstate out there too.
- Tell them you’re not in a rush and you’d rather have quotes that are accurate and thoughtful rather than just quick. A comparison that you can review.
- Tell them how you want follow-up. Whether calls, emails, texts, or none, state your preferences. This can be a very simple test of how well they listen to you.
If it’s been several years since you’ve checked your auto and home insurance, consider pushing past the inward groan. There’s a good chance it’ll help your budget!
